Moinho do Papel is a paper mill museum located in the city of Leiria, Portugal. Set in the margins of the river Lis, It is the first paper mill to have been founded in the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to 1413.
After decades of abandoment, the building was restored and converted into a community museum by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in 2009.
Despite the architetural revamp, the visual identity of the museum remained scattered and inconsistent, without any set logo or font.
This project aims to solidify Moinho do Papel’s visual identity by taking inspiration from existing elements, preserving their historical legacy: the water wheels, the source of the building’s renewable energy; the centuries-old, preserved millstones buried in the space; the accent color in the buildings’ windows, doors, and utensils following Siza Vieira’s reconstruction; and the recycled paper produced daily in workshops.
The project resulted in a 30-page identity manual detailing the logo as well as several mockups and blueprints for museum-specific applications: flour sacks, stationary, paper watermarks among others.
